A few weeks ago some stuff landed on my desk from a company called Stormsure. They have products that are able apparently, to ‘fix almost anything’. I received a box of self-adhesive Tuff Tape waterproof repair strip, some Tuff Tape waterproof repair patches, some flexible repair adhesive and some water repellent spray.
Clearly this stuff will be suitable for a multitude of things – indeed they talk about patching / fixing / waterproofing textile clothing, rucksacks, inflatables, horse rugs and so on. We had a chat in the office about this – we’d add ripped motorcycle seats and torn tents to the list of motorcycle related bits and bobs this would work for. Naturally, with protective clothing, big rips will compromise the abrasion resistance so we’d replace the item – but small nicks, small holes, small tears on a pocket etc we’d happily fix. That said – if you’re mid motorcycle tour and get a tear that you need mending and made waterproof then having the Stormsure kit in your luggage would be very useful, indeed.

But here’s the thing – I don’t have clothing or accessories for my motorcycle life that have rips / tears / holes in – so how could I test it? I’m certainly NOT getting the Stanley knife out. Fear not! I found a willing 1HP ultra-strong volunteer who just happens to be good at trashing expensive textiles. Ladies and gents – here’s Chuck, who had just ripped the strap away from his rug. He won’t take it easy on any repairs or look after the finished article, either. If Stormsure can fix Chuck’s rug, and keep it fixed, then it’ll work for textiles, rucksacks, seats, tents and other motorcycle paraphernalia.
The flexible repair adhesive from Stormsure was our weapon of choice for mending the rug. It’s highly waterproof (It’ll need to be as Chuck wears his rug in all poor weather conditions), highly durable (he’s clumsy, so durable is good) and comes in different colours – clear, black, white and khaki. We chose ‘clear’ for the job.
Cracking open the tube tells a tale straight away – this stuff is strong! It’s an odd thing but I’ve always been able to tell the strength of adhesive by the smell.. We set to work firstly on reattaching the strap to itself through the clasp using the Stormsure adhesive, applying pressure to the ‘fix’ by sandwiching it between two pieces of wood with a G-Clamp.
Next, we applied the adhesive to the strap that’s come away from the rug (we think Chuck did this by rolling and getting his foot caught!), spread the adhesive out with a damp cocktail stick (this ensures even coverage in all areas and cuts down curing time). To apply pressure to this area we simply rested the heavy G-Clamp / wood combo on top of it, then left the whole lot where it was for 24 hours, to make sure it was fully dry. (Stormsure say 10 hours will do).
24 hours later and the results are impressive. Everything seems welded in place as it should be. Now for the test – the rug goes back on Chuck and endures a week of varying weather conditions, including night time temperatures of 4 degrees celsius and torrential downpours. Not to mention more rolling, galloping and general horsing around from our tester. Our conclusion is- Stormsure take a bow! The strap is as good as new and showing no signs of coming apart. Based on what we’ve seen with this product we’d happily recommend you take a look at their range. We’ll be hanging on to it all for sure.
