The British factory has just unveiled a new, smaller version of its much-loved Tiger – and it’s going to be powered by the same 660cc engine as the recently released Trident.

REVEALED: Triumph’s Tiger Sport 660

It might have seemingly come out of nowhere, but the introduction of the ‘baby’ Tiger shouldn’t be a massive surprise. With the Trident 660 built to take on the likes of Yamaha’s enduringly popular MT-07, it seems a logical step for Triumph to have developed the Tiger 660 to challenge Yamaha’s Tracer 7.

At this stage official details are still a little scarce, but a close look at the prototype does give us a good idea of what we can expect from the new middleweight sport tourer. The one thing we can be fairly sure about is the engine. It looks identical to the Trident’s 660cc motor which kicks out 80bhp and 64Nm of torque – and chances are it’ll stay much the same (bar a little retune). The gearing will likely get a bit of a tweak too, to help give it slightly longer legs for sustained high speed cruising.

The frame looks much the same – although the subframe seems to be a bit chunkier and a bit longer (probably to better deal with passengers and luggage). It’s much the same for the suspension. It looks very similar to the Trident setup, though we expect it’ll have slightly more travel at both the front and rear. The Nissin brakes look the same as the Trident, as do the Michelin Road 5 tyres – and we also reckon it’ll come with the same electronics package as its sportier sibling, with ride-by-wire throttle, rider modes, traction control, ABS and smartphone connectivity as standard (or available as an optional extra).

So what’s actually different between the Trident and the Tiger? Well, there’s a fairing, a tall screen and the footpegs have been mounted further forward too. We can be sure about those. We also reckon there’s going to be a bigger fuel tank too. The Trident’s is already a healthy 14 litres, but we’re expecting the Tiger to be bigger still (to help on those big mile journeys).

There’s still quite a lot we don’t know about the new Tiger Sport 660 from Triumph, but chances are we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out. The Hinckley-based brand is staying tight-lipped about when it’ll be released, but we’re expecting to see the finished machine in just a few months’ time. The big question that remains is… what’ll it cost? With the Trident coming in at a shade under £7500, we’re guessing that the additional extras and few tweaks will take the price of the ‘baby’ Tiger to around the £8000-mark. It’s not cheap… but when you consider the level of equipment, the quality of the finish and the prestige of owning a Triumph (and factor in the favourable reviews of the 660cc motor), it seems pretty good value to us.

As a quick aside, the imminent release of Triumph’s Tiger Sport 660 is as good an indication as any that there’s likely to be another version of the bike on the way very soon. Back in 2020, internal documents hinted that there could be a more off-road-oriented 660 (with wire wheels, a larger front wheel and knobbly tyres) – and we’re quietly hoping a Tiger Rally 660 makes an appearance very soon.
