Malcolm Smith is one of the world’s pre-eminent off-road racers – making a name for himself in the ‘60s and ‘70s with his dirt-based exploits and contribution to the iconic On Any Sunday documentary. And he’s just released a brilliant video, showing some of the most significant machines from his long and storied career.
The list of Smith’s accomplishments is long. He won eight gold medals between 1966 and 1976 in the gruelling International Six Day Trial, he’s a six time winner of the Baja 1000 (three times on a motorcycle and three times in a buggy), he won the Baja 500 four times (twice on a bike and twice in a buggy), he took two wins in the Mint 400, he won the Roof of Africa Rallye, competed in the Paris Dakar Rally twice, and he won the Atlas Rallye in the mountains of Morocco. And that’s just the big ones. He had countless other successes on a local and regional scale.
