Daniel Carriera, executive director of the World Superbike Championship has said that Dorna is considering running THREE Superbike races per meeting instead of the current two race system.
In 2016, the races were split across Saturday and Sunday, before the ‘reverse starting grid’ for Race 2 was introduced in 2017. But it has been revealed that Dorna is planning to freshen up its formula once again, introducing a third race to the Superbike World Championship.

In an interview with Speedweek.com, Carriera said: “We are thinking about different formats for the future, we talk to all our partners and we pay attention to what TV stations and race promoters want. There’s a lot on the table. We can do three races – we can do a sprint race on Saturday and the normal distance on Sunday. In order to better evaluate we will also start a survey among the fans. When we have all the data, we will decide.”
Carriera added: “We realise that we will not be able to please everyone, but we will try to make the best decision, we are happy with how things are going now, but to evolve the Superbike World Championship, we have to change things and bring something new every year, we are happy to have a race on Saturday, but the fans are not happy with the package offered on Sunday, so we are evaluating the possibility of having a race on Saturday and two on Sunday, but with two races on Sunday we will need more from TV, so we will have to agree with them too.”
In 2016 we changed the format because the TV was not always able to guarantee us the coverage of both races on Sunday. What is certain is that the moment we choose to play three races, it will be so for the whole Championship.”
