With one minute to go it had been Marquez who was fastest, but only just, a mere 0.065s behind was Vinales in a smart second overall before Jorge upped the pace with a full-on final lap charge.
The Yamaha man, in his last meeting for the Japanese factory before making the switch to Ducati next year, banged in his best of 1m 30.463 at the end of the session and it wasn’t bettered by any of the other riders in the dying seconds under the Spanish sun.
The two Espargaros were in the top six with Pol fourth and Aleix sixth, splitting the duo was Andrea Dovizioso.
Andrea Iannone finished up seventh fastest whilst Valentino Rossi managed a best of eighth quickest, Petrucci ninth and Dani Pedrosa saw out the top ten in his comeback from injury.
