British motorcycling legend Barry Sheene has been mentioned a lot recently, as the former world champion was the last Briton to win a premier class race before Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) took the record in Brno in the Czech GP.
Sheene, who came to define an era of two-wheeled motorsport as he took back-to-back premier class titles in 1976 and 1977 with Suzuki, took his last victory, his 19th, in 1981 at the Swedish Grand Prix in Anderstorp, then on a Yamaha.

Sheene died in 2003 and was, until Danny Kent’s 2015 Moto3 world title, the most recent British world champion on two wheels, and he remains the UK’s most recent premier class world champion. Fondly remembered on and off track, MotoGP celebrated the man and legend with a parade lap around Silverstone ahead of the lights going out earlier today, with an incredible selection of the bikes ridden by Sheene during his illustrious career – from the Suzukis that saw Sheene rule the world to the Yamaha that the late champion rode to his last win.
