Texting whilst driving – one of the most dangerous distractions for a car driver – may be detectable by police using a new scanner. The US Federal Communications Commission said research has found texting while driving increases a crash risk by 23%.
US Company ComSonics is developing a device that picks up on radio frequencies that come from a mobile phone being used inside a car. Malcolm McIntyre, the company’s calibration services manager, said text messages emit a different frequency than other mobile activities and these would be picked up by the device. ComSonic is still working on a way to find out who might have been texting if there is more than one person in a car. SOunds like a great idea to us!
