Dainese’s new AIRBAG vest. And you can wear it with ANY jacket.

Dainese has just unveiled a new D-air airbag – and it’s a versatile vest that can be worn underneath or on top of any jacket.

The latest introduction to Dainese’s D-air line-up is its new Smart Jacket. It’s the first airbag vest featuring D-air technology that can be worn over or under your jacket, without the need to connect it to your bike – and you can even fold it up and chuck it in your backpack or topbox when you get to your destination.

Price-wise, you’re talking £569.95 for the new Smart Jacket. Ok, so it’s not exactly cheap – but when compared Dainese’s previous generation full jacket and airbag systems which would easily set you back a grand, it seems Dainese’s opening up its life saving tech to an even wider audience.

The result of over twenty-five years of Dainese research on its D-air system, the new Smart Jacket is described by the Italian brand as the ultimate in airbag technology for motorbikes. And it’s essentially the same system that’s used by MotoGP racers – so you should feel pretty confident it’ll look after you should the worst happen and you take a tumble on two wheels.

If you’re not familiar with the D-air system, its ‘brain’ is its triggering algorithm. Essentially, it’s an ECU which works to analyse the data transmitted from seven sensors at a speed of 1000 times each second, to detect any dangerous situations – and if necessary, activate the system. And for the first time, the D-air system includes stationary impact protection too.

The ‘heart’ of the D-air system is its shield – which covers the riders’ chest and back and (apparently) offers the same degree of protection as seven Level 1 back protectors, despite not having any form of hard-shell armour built in. That’s mostly thanks to Dainese’s patented internal microfilament technology, which guarantees that the airbag’s inflation is even and controlled throughout the entire surface and creates a shield that envelops the body and delivers protection to the rider.

Aside from the main features of the new D-air smart jacket, it also comes with a sophisticated ventilation system. The external fabric of the jacket is ventilated in itself, but the Shield is also folded over on itself, enabling air to pass through the front part of the airbag. It’s also designed to be worn in the rain, thanks to the water-repellent fabric and waterproof D-air technology that have no problem with water.

Its battery will last a claimed 26 hours, and comes with fast charging capability – so you shouldn’t have a problem ensuring it’s always ready to go, even when you’re out touring.
