BBL Batteries is an independent business and their battery experts can advise on the best solution for a customer’s individual requirements. Below is an overview of the different technologies available today.
Motorcycle Battery Technology: The choices
Motorcycle batteries – there’s a wide range to choose from, which technology is best suited to your motorbike?
Conventional
The standard, conventional battery is the industry standard. Built to withstand vibration, protected from corrosion and maintenance free, conventional motorcycles are the most popular technology for most riders.
AGM
You may have heard of AGM Start-Stop car batteries, but did you know you AGM technology is also available in motorcycle batteries? AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) is used in motorcycle batteries to contain the acid and stop it from flowing inside the battery.
AGM batteries have low internal resistance which allows for fast charging and better performance under heavier loads.
Gel
Gel batteries are typically used in highly cyclic applications, and due to their unique technology, they can be mounted in any position. Because the gel material holds the active materials in a semi solid state, gravity isn’t required to ensure these batteries perform.
For motorcycles that have an awkward battery location or require the battery to be at a 45 degree + angle, gel technology is required.
Lithium
Lithium is still a relatively new technology, but it’s extremely popular amongst bikers. Lithium batteries are extremely lightweight, long lasting and have useful features like Bluetooth and built in BMS (Battery Management Systems).
Conventional | AGM | Gel | Lithium | |
Maintenance Free | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Reliability | Standard | High | High | High |
Life Expectancy | 2 Years | 3 Years | 4 Years | 7 Years + |
Upfront Cost | £ | ££ | ££ | £££ |
