KTM and Alpinestars have joined forces to produce its new MANAGUA GTX Tech-Air and DURBAN GTX Tech-Air jackets – which come equipped with Alpinestars Tech-Air system, the world’s first self-contained street airbag that functions without the need for sensors to be installed on the bike.
The MANAGUA GTX Tech-Air jacket is KTM’s latest street oriented bit of kit. It’s manufactured from fully laminated and lightweight GORE-TEX outer material, and equipped with a removable thermal lining and an innovative ventilation system. The DURBAN GTX Tech-Air jacket is more geared towards adventure off-road riding, but it’s happy on the street too. It features an ultra-lightweight removable Gore-Tex membrane with a micro-fleece lining, while zipper seals help to protect against all the wind and rain nature can throw at it. Perfect.
But it’s the fact they’re packed with Alpinestars innovative Tech-Air system that we’re most excited.
If you’ve not heard of the Tech-Air system before – essentially, it’s an airbag that’s been incorporated into a specially designed vest, which is then easily attached or removed from the jacket/s. Sensors detect an impact between 30-60 milliseconds and fully inflate the airbag in under 25 milliseconds offering instantaneous, high-pressure protection to the rider in a crash by covering the full back, shoulders, kidney areas and chest.
No news yet on prices or availability – but we’ll hazard a guess that the new gear will be doing the rounds at the big bike shows, ready to be on sale for 2019.
