It’s rare I go a day without lugging a rucksack around, which explains why I’ve got through so many over the years. But none of them have proved quite as well thought out as BMW’s Function 3.

When I first got the bag, I had no idea of the specification it harboured. I didn’t realise the hardened bottom was there to protect a stowed helmet, just as I had no idea the expandable, polyester-polyurethane main compartment – 28-33 litres – was fully waterproof.
I learnt its potential through using it, which turned out to be an enjoyable experience. As far as rucksacks go, it’s extremely comfortable, made more so by its ergonomic shaped back section. There are both adjustable chest and waist straps to help spread the bag’s weight across the torso, while the integrated carrying straps can be used to attached the rucksack safely to a motorbike.
The internal laptop holder’s suitable for computers of up to 15in, while the four outer pockets are ideal for storing essentials. Its usage hasn’t been exclusive to biking, doubling up as my daily sarny carrier and airport hand luggage bag. I’m chuffed to bits with it.
