MyMotorCycleCheck.com – the UK’s No.1 motorbike and scooter provenance website – has saved many a biker from making an expensive two-wheeled mistake. Valuation expert Rob Hobson suggests three wise buys…

Highly desirable: BMW S1000 R

Safe bet: Triumph Speed Triple

Used star: Honda CB1100

“For our highly desirable model this month we’ve chosen the BMW S1000 R. There aren’t too many of these in the used market yet, but this bike looks like being a really strong performer. So long as you carry out a history check to ensure the one you’re looking at is what it claims to be – for instance, that it hasn’t been written-off and isn’t still on finance – then this is a bike worth paying a premium for.

“In terms of bikes that hold their value, safe bets don’t come much safer than the Triumph Speed Triple. All incarnations of this bike enjoy a loyal following. Do your homework, check before you buy and you shouldn’t go too far wrong. Watch for mileage and a full service history.

“For our ‘used star’ this month we’ve chosen the Honda CB1100. This bike is a true modern classic. Almost a collectors’ piece, most are well looked after with relatively low miles. When it comes to negotiating, remember, as well as revealing a bike’s history, MyMotorCycleCheck.com also provides valuations – a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.”

As to market trends, Hobson commented: “As we head into the winter period proper, we have weakened values slightly for November, although only to reflect the general slowdown in demand. While advertised retail figures may drop in the short term, above average condition low mileage bikes can be expected to remain very much in demand.

“Having enjoyed a relatively mild early part of the year, followed by a pretty good and elongated summer, it seems likely that the new market will finish around 10% up on the previous 12 months. Given the period of decline over the last four or five years, this is a significant positive shift.

“It is clear that the adventure market is the one to watch, along with the retro and scrambler scenes. Virtually all manufacturers have bikes following these themes. In particular, the new Ducati Scrambler looks likely to attract a lot of attention.

“The used market has continued to tick along steadily over recent weeks, with unseasonably warm and dry conditions helping to maintain showroom interest. However, with the clocks having gone back, the idea of heading out for a ride becomes less appealing, which leads to a slowdown in footfall.”
