If you’ve ever fallen off a bike at speed, you’ll know the value of a good set of leathers. If you’ve ever fallen off in a set of Crowtree leathers you’ll know the feeling of dusting yourself down, completely unhurt with leather undamaged and thanking Alec Baumber for his skill and artistry with cowhide and thread.
Sadly, Alec passed away last week and motorcycling feels an empty place without him. Alec was the unsung hero of a thousand plucky club racers. Every Monday morning the nation’s plumbers, electricians and brickies could step into work after walking away from a club racing tumble the day before wearing Crowtree leathers.

No one did quality and fit like Crowtree, no one did customer service like it either. Alec and wife Linda became friends with all of their clients and when word got out they were planning to retire in 2006, so many customers old and new bombarded them with request for ‘one last suit’ that they carried on working because they couldn’t bear to let their friends down.
Alec, you will be sadly missed, not only for your skill, but for being a wonderful man to know.
There’s a service at Alford Crematorium in Lincolnshire on Thursday September 4th at 1pm. Linda has asked that instead of flowers that people make a donation to the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance.
